Memorial museum Passchendaele, Zonnebeke‘Passchendaele 1917’ became a nickname in the history of the First World War, a word that was used to symbolise violence in its most brutal and senseless form. During the Third Battle of Ypres, in one hundred days only a few miles of frontline were gained at the cost of more than 400,000 casualties.
On ANZAC Day 2004, 90 years after the beginning of the Great War, the community of Zonnebeke opened a brand-new museum in the grounds of the Zonnebeke Chateau ... the successor of the well-known Streekmuseum and choise for a classical presentation.
Visitors are given an overview of the five battles of Ypres by means of authentic photographic material, a wide selection of historical artefacts and several life-like dioramas.
At the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, the visitor will get the opportunity to walk through a German trench and descend into a unique 20 feet deep British dugout with communication and dressing posts, headquarters and accommodation. The museum is an ideal starting point for a visit to the area, an absolute must for tourists and specialists.
From Monday to Friday: 10:00 - 18:00. On Saterday and Sunday: 14:00 - 18:00.
